Lessons for Leaders:
The Martyrdom of Al-Hajj Malik El Shabazz

He chooses to wage his struggle in New York against the greatest military and political power of the time.  He chooses the issue of human rights and dignity for the "Black" man, and demands that America be indicted for its treatment of the African-American population.  His background, his issue, and his solution are important because he comes from a time-honored tradition of righteous men who stand firm against oppression.

Al-Hajj Malik El Shabazz:
Our Leadership Model

An ironic, yet logical, twist to the history of Islam in North America is that a person who was only Muslim for 11 months perhaps most influenced the future direction of Islam.

A little over thirty years ago, a man's life was cut prematurely short on a stage in a Harlem Ballroom.   A few months short of his fortieth birthday and at a major turning point in his life, this man was killed not so much for who he had been, or even who he was, but for who he might eventually become.

THE MESSAGE is delighted to bring its readers the true understanding and legacy of our beloved brother Al Hajj Malik El Shabazz.  Our model of true leadership, an example of sincerity, personal discipline, courage and clarity of vision.

Let us all study his life to draw inspiration and strength. As we review the following material, we encourage you to question our own selves. Are we as prepared and committed to serve Allah (SWT) as our brother was?

The Legacy of Malik Shabazz:  Reassurance to the seekers of Truth

"I believe that it would be almost impossible to find anywhere in America a black man who has lived further down in the mud of human society than I have; or a black man who has been any more ignorant than I have; or a black man who has suffered more anguish during his life than I have. But it is only after the deepest darkness that the greatest joy can come; it is only after slavery and prison that the sweetest appreciation of freedom can come."

Beyond Malcolm:
Life and Political Legacy

His life as Malcolm X is emblazoned in the collective memory of the nation, and he is virtually called by no other name.  Yet Malcolm X was not assassinated on a winter's day nearly 11 months prior to that fateful day.  It was Malik El Shabazz who died that day.

Letter of Malik Shabazz to Said Ramadan

"Since my return to the States I have been very busy trying to get the Muslims reorganized into True Islam."

Beyond Malcolm:
Muslim Leadership for the 21st Century

Malcolm X continues to influence people around the world and still remains a model for leadership. He was courageous, humble, intelligent, generous, committed, disciplined, and more than anything else, he sacrificed his life for truth and social justice and died a martyr. This type of leadership, with few exceptions, is sorely missing from the global stage today.
